The Legend of Bird Nest According to the legendary, the first Chinese who ate bird nest is the Ming Dynasty Great Navigator, Zheng He. In one of his long voyages, Zheng He's fleet encountered a thunder storm. He and his fleet were forced to stop at one of the deserted Malay islands. At that critical moment, there was a shortage of food. Zheng He unintentionally found some bird nest cups on the cliff. He instructed his crews to pluck, wash with clean water and cook the bird nests. A few days after taking the bird nests, the crews appeared to have shining reddish face. Obviously, it was the effect of the bird nests. Zheng Ho brought some bird nests back to China and conferred them to the King, Ming Cheng Zhu. |
General Knowledge of Bird Nest
Bird nest is made by swiftlet using its saliva mixed with other materials. The best bird nest is made by Aerodramus Faciphagus. This is because the protein content and nutrients in the saliva is quite high.
House bird nest and cave bird nest
Generally based on the location the swiftlet construct its nest, swiftlet can be divided into two groups namely house swiftlet and cave swiftlet.
House swiftlet build its nest on the man made beam in a bird house. This type of bird nest can be harvested easily. Normally the farmers do not disturb the bird nest which is still in use by the swiftlet. When the swiflets grow up and fly away, the farmers will harvest it. Hence, there is no disturbance on the swiftlets reproduction. The bird nest is also very fresh.
Cave swiftlet build its nest in the cave. Because the roof of the cave is quite a distance from the floor, cave surface is not flat, the harvesting is very dangerous. Due to these problems, the harvesting is not done frequently. Some of the bird nests are contaminated. The farmer may harvest those bird nest that are still in use by the swiftlets.
Both house swiftlet and cave swiftlet feed on some insects. They only stay in different environment. The bird nest built by using saliva has no difference between bird swiftlet .
Blood bird nest
There are two talks about the formation of blood bird nest.
1. The food of Aerodramus faciphagus contain algae entailing its saliva contain blood.
2. Those bird nest constructed on the cliff, with its ferous content seeping into the bird nest making it appear orange color.
There are grossly two (2) types of bird nests namely "cave bird nest" and "house bird nest".

Cave bird nest is scarce in West Malaysia because it is generally found on the cliffs and overhanging crags which are abundant in East Malaysia, not West Malaysia .
House bird nests
House bird nest is very common in West Malaysia because there are bird houses built to lure the swiftlets to stay. Hence, house bird nest is under control environment and can be harvested regularly.
Market survey found that most of the bird nests sold in the market are impure, adulterated with foreign materials or fake ones. The retailers may or may not know the nature of the products they are selling. To observe whether a bird nest is a fake one or real one, please refer to the guidelines in the articles.
The process of production of pure bird nest does not involve adulteration of any additive, use of bleaching agent or harmful chemicals. It is a scientific process of reinstating the bird nest as if it is first produced by the swiftlets. It is cleaned using distilled water or reverse osmosis water only. The larger particles like sand are washed away using a brush. Those smaller particles and features are picked using forceps by skilled workers. The processed bird nests are checked under quality control to ensure that they are totally cleaned. You may feel the elastic filaments/strands and smell the scent of egg inside a pure bird nest.
Bird nest contains amino acids, glycoprotein and Epidermic Growth Factor (EGF). Epidermic Growth Factor promotes cell growth and tissue repair. It also has antioxidant content which can slow down the ageing process.
Besides, bird nest possesses various minerals like calcium, sodium, potassium etc which generally increase the body resistance against diseases.
